Multi-Events

Decathlon, heptathlon, pentathlon, and men’s indoor heptathlon in track and field meets: how a multi-event is one parent event with its component events, how to set one up and enter athletes, and how it’s scored.

What a multi-event is

A multi-event is a parent competition made up of several scored sub-events.

Examples:

  • decathlon
  • heptathlon
  • pentathlon
  • men’s indoor heptathlon

The athlete is competing in the combined event, but each discipline still produces its own result.

Set up a decathlon, heptathlon, or pentathlon

A multi-event is one parent event plus the component events under it. You create the parent, and 2Timer creates the components. Multi-events aren’t offered in the new-meet wizard; add them on Events:

  1. Open Events and add an event with the Discipline Multi-Event.
  2. In Type, choose Decathlon, Heptathlon, Pentathlon, or Men's Indoor Heptathlon.
  3. Save. 2Timer creates the parent and every component event the type defines, in order.

The components are created for you. You do not build them separately and link them afterwards — 2Timer refuses that on purpose:

  • component events cannot be created directly; create the parent instead
  • component events cannot be deleted directly; delete the parent to remove them
  • entries for a preset component must be added on the parent multi-event

If you open a component event on Entries, the page says so and links you to the parent.

Events in a decathlon, heptathlon, and pentathlon

Preset Components
Decathlon 100m, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, 400m, 110m Hurdles, Discus, Pole Vault, Javelin, 1500m
Heptathlon 100m Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put, 200m, Long Jump, Javelin, 800m
Pentathlon 60m Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put, Long Jump, 800m
Men's Indoor Heptathlon 60m, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, 60m Hurdles, Pole Vault, 1000m

Enter athletes in a multi-event

Add entries on the parent multi-event. 2Timer creates that athlete’s component entries across every component event.

Because the components are generated together, a component entry’s identity fields — athlete, bib, round, group — are managed from the parent. Add, move, or delete an athlete’s participation on the parent, not on an individual component.

With the parent selected on Entries, you get a grid with one column per component, so a whole multi-event can be scored from one screen.

How multi-event points are scored

Each component result is converted to points using the World Athletics fixed-formula scoring tables for that event and its mode — track, throw, horizontal jump, or vertical jump.

The athlete’s total points across all components determine the overall placing in the multi-event.

Multi-events: things to keep in mind

  • Running components may still need heats or lane handling.
  • Field components still use the normal field-series result entry.
  • The combined standing depends on the component results being complete and accurate.
  • The parent is a container: it carries the combined score, not a time or mark of its own.
