Scoreboard

The Scoreboard page controls what each connected display board shows during a meet: following the meet automatically, or holding a screen you send by hand. There are two scoreboard systems:

  • DisplayWorks boards show results only for now. Start lists, team scores, and announcements will come when DisplayWorks can show them.
  • Open Meet Display is for any scoreboard, video board, or stream graphics program whose maker says it accepts Open Meet Display. It can show start lists, results, team scores, and announcements.

Open the Scoreboard page

Open Scoreboard in the meet navigation (“Manage what every connected display is showing”).

At the Basic level, Scoreboard isn’t in the sidebar: on Connections, the scoreboard’s card has Manage sends on the Scoreboard page.

Each scoreboard connection is a card on the page: one card, one board. If the meet has no scoreboard, the page says so and points you to Scoreboard on Connections.

Add a DisplayWorks board

  1. Open Connections and add DisplayWorks under Scoreboard.
  2. Enter the DisplayWorks computer’s address and port.
  3. Save.

The connection’s settings, such as the receiver address, rows per page, paging, and board name, stay on its edit page, reached with Edit on the board’s card. See Setting Up Each System.

Add an Open Meet Display board

  1. Open Connections and add Open Meet Display under Scoreboard.
  2. Enter the Receiver IP address of the computer running the board’s program (127.0.0.1 when it runs on this computer), and the Port and Path from that program’s setup guide. A new connection starts with port 43339 and path /omd.
  3. Under Screens to send, leave on the screens this board should get. All four are on to start.
  4. Save.

A board that only should show results can have the other screens turned off. See Setting Up Each System. If you set up DisplayWorks for a board that is really another program, open the connection and change its System to Open Meet Display; its address and other settings stay as they are.

Reading a board’s card

Each card shows:

  • the board’s name, and Connected or Disconnected;
  • what the board is showing now, and when it was sent;
  • the last error from the board, if there was one;
  • a note when something is stopping a send.

Connected means the last send didn’t fail. A board nothing has been sent to yet also says Connected, so the real test is sending results and looking at the physical board. A board whose last send failed says Disconnected and turns red.

If the connection’s Send updates is off, the card says so and links to its settings.

Auto-follow or manual

A board can Auto-follow the meet or be Manual.

  • Auto-follow: the board follows the active event and updates as results change. The card says in plain words what it will do, such as “Follows the active event. Results update automatically.” Use it for a board that should keep up without anyone watching it.
  • Manual: you choose what goes out and press Send to this board. Nothing changes until you send. Use it for an awards board, or one that should hold a screen while the meet moves on.

Show a race on the scoreboard (the active event)

Boards that auto-follow show the meet’s active event. To make a race the active event, select it on Entries and press the scoreboard button (Show on scoreboard) in the toolbar. Boards that follow the meet switch to that event, round, and heat. The button appears once the meet has a scoreboard connection.

Send results to a board by hand

  1. On Scoreboard, set the board’s card to Manual.
  2. On a board that takes more than results, choose the screen: Start List, Results, Team Scores, or Announcement.
  3. Pick the Event. In track and field, also pick the Round, and the heat or flight, so the board can hold one heat while the next is run.
  4. Press Send to this board.

Clear a board

Clear board blanks a manual board. On an auto-follow board the button reads Clear for now: it blanks the board, and auto-follow resumes with the next event or results update.

Show only official results on a board

On the scoreboard connection’s edit page:

  • Results to Send: All, or Official only.
  • Events to Send: All, Track, or Field.

With Official only, a round’s results go to the board once they’re Official (see Results and Reports). Sending unofficial results by hand to such a board shows an error saying why, until the round is Official or you change the setting.

When the board sends on its own (Send mode)

A scoreboard connection’s Send mode is Manual to start, so nothing is sent until you send from the Scoreboard page or set the board to auto-follow. Send updates must be on for anything to be sent.

Scoreboard on race day

  1. Add the scoreboard connection before the meet.
  2. Send results for a finished event and check that they appear on the physical board.
  3. Decide for each board whether it auto-follows or is driven by hand.
  4. Set Official only on boards that must never show unofficial results.
  5. During the meet, drive manual boards from Scoreboard, and show races on auto-follow boards with Show on scoreboard on Entries.
  6. Clear boards at the end of the session.

Scoreboard: common problems

  • The card says Disconnected: the last send failed. Check the receiver’s address and port on the connection, that DisplayWorks or the board’s own program is running and listening, and that the computer’s firewall allows it. In Chrome, a board on another computer also needs Allow on Chrome’s local network prompt.
  • The card says sending is off: turn on Send updates in the connection’s settings.
  • A send shows an error: the board is set to Official only and the results aren’t Official, or Events to Send leaves out that event.
  • The board shows old results: nothing has been sent since the change. Send again, or switch the board to auto-follow.
  • No events to pick: Events to Send leaves out every event; widen it on the connection.
  • No Start List to choose: the board is DisplayWorks, which shows results only, or Start lists is off in the Open Meet Display connection’s Screens to send. Cross country and road races have no start list screen.

Scoreboard: checklist

  • Every physical board has a card.
  • A test send of results reached each physical board.
  • Boards that must show only official results have Official set.
  • Auto-follow boards describe what you want them to do.
  • Manual boards show the screen you mean, not a leftover.
