Practical guides for humans, with structure that is easy for AI systems to parse.

Track and Field Setup

Setting up an indoor or outdoor track and field meet before race day: the new-meet wizard’s events and rounds, the seeding profile, disciplines, rounds and heats, hip numbers, field mark units, team scoring, teams, and sessions.

Create a track meet: events and rounds in the wizard

Press Indoor Track & Field or Outdoor Track & Field on the home screen. In the new-meet wizard:

  • Basics asks Events/Rounds: Use prelims/finals defaults, Finals only, or Start with a blank meet (no divisions or events; you add them afterwards).
  • Rules asks for the Seeding profile (Standard level).
  • Divisions picks the divisions.
  • Events has Track Events, Field Events, and Relay events, each with a Rounds count, girls, boys, or both, and + Other timed event, + Other field event, and + Other relay for events not in the list.

Rounds stay whole at every level: a Basic meet can have prelims and finals too.

The seeding profile (how heats are seeded by default)

A seeding profile gives each kind of event (sprints and hurdles, distance, relays, field events) its default seeding rules: how heats are filled, lane order, and advancement starting points. Choose it on the wizard’s Rules step, or later on Setup → Track & Field Setup → Seeding profile. Each round can still be changed in the seeding workspace.

At the Basic level, the profile isn’t asked: the meet uses the default profile from Settings → Seeding Profiles. See Seeding Profiles and Defaults.

Event disciplines

Each track and field event’s Discipline decides seeding, how results show, and whether wind or the field event grid applies:

Discipline Examples
Dash/Run 100m–10000m flat races
Hurdles 60mH, 100mH, 110mH, 300mH, 400mH
Steeplechase 2000mSC, 3000mSC (outdoor meets only)
Race Walk 1500m walk, 3000m walk, 5000m walk
Relay 4×100m, 4×400m, sprint medley, DMR
Horizontal Jump Long jump, triple jump
Vertical Jump High jump, pole vault
Throw Shot put, discus, javelin, hammer, weight
Multi-Event Decathlon, heptathlon, pentathlon, indoor heptathlon

If the discipline is wrong, seeding, wind entry, and field event results won’t behave as expected.

Add rounds: prelims, semifinals, finals

  1. Open Events and open the event.
  2. Under Round Setup, press + (Add round) for each round you need. Remove a round with its ✕.
  3. For each round, set Heats (or Flights for field events) and Max/Heat (or Max/Flt).
  4. Press Save Changes.

The first round is round 1 and the last is the final. An event with one round is a final only. The heat count is a starting point; seeding decides the final count. Leave Max/Heat blank to use the meet’s default lane count.

Each round keeps what you set up for it when you add or remove another. Rounds are named by where they sit, so they take the name of their new place:

  • + on a one-round event makes that round the Prelims, with its athletes, heats, and results, and adds an empty Finals of 1 heat after it.
  • + on Prelims and Finals adds Semis between them; on Prelims, Semis, and Finals it adds Quarters after the Prelims. Either works only while the rounds after the new one are empty.
  • ✕ on the Semis or Quarters removes that round and its athletes; the rounds after it move up and fill from the round before, using their own seeding rule. It works only while those later rounds are empty.
  • ✕ on the Finals removes them and their athletes, and the round before becomes the Finals.
  • ✕ on the Prelims of a two-round event, or on its empty Finals, is Convert to final-only.

When you save, 2Timer says what will change. If athletes will be deleted, type DELETE and the number (for example DELETE 16) first. Each round’s schedule slot, seeding rule, results status, wind, and timing reads move with it. If FinishLynx was already sent the schedule, it still has the old round numbers, so send the schedule again afterwards.

A long jump, triple jump, or throw has no +. Its Round Setup asks for the Format instead:

  • Prelims and finals (the usual one): three attempts each, then the top 9 (or the number you pick beside it) get three more, and every mark counts. Both happen in one round.
  • Straight attempts: everyone gets the same number of attempts, set beside it. No finals.
  • Qualifying round, then a final: two rounds. Qualifying marks only decide who makes the final, and the final starts from zero.

To go back from Qualifying round, then a final to one round, use Convert to final-only while the final is empty: the Qualifying marks then count. See Field Events.

Heats and lanes: set by seeding

Heats and lanes are assigned by seeding (see Seeding and Advancement). What you set up feeds it:

  • lanes per heat come from the round’s Max/Heat or the meet’s Oval lanes and Straight lanes;
  • the seeding profile’s rules;
  • the round structure;
  • the discipline, which decides lanes, positions, or field flights.

To move an athlete to a different heat or lane after seeding, change it in the seeding workspace and save. Seeding the round again rebuilds its heats and lanes.

Hip numbers

Setup → Track & Field Setup → Hip numbers decides the visible race-day number for track events: the lane or start position, numbers starting at 1 in each heat, or one run across the round. Changing it doesn’t rewrite seeded heats: reseed the rounds you want renumbered. See Hip Numbering.

Field mark units: metric or English

Setup → Track & Field Setup → Field marks is Metric (m) or English (Feet-Inches), for how jumps and throws are typed and shown. A division can use a different one with Field event marks on the division.

Team scoring setup

Setup → Team Scoring has Individual points and Relay points (the points ladders), and Individual scorers and Relay squads (how many per school can score). Divisions can have their own. See Track and Field Team Scoring.

Teams that shouldn’t score

To keep a school or club in the meet without it scoring, turn off its Scored? toggle on Teams or on the team’s page. See Teams and Leagues.

Team lanes, sessions, and leagues

  • Team-lane seeding (reserved lanes for duals and similar meets) needs the teams’ Lane Slots set before seeding. See Team-Lane Seeding.
  • Sessions split the meet into blocks of the day and estimate start times. See Sessions.
  • Leagues group teams for conference reports; Tools → Generate Double-Dual Leagues on Leagues builds double-dual pairings. See Teams and Leagues.

What Basic leaves out on a track meet

At the Basic level, a track meet’s Setup keeps the meet details, venue, oval lanes, field marks, and points ladders, and leaves out track length and shape, straight lanes, results status, the seeding profile, hip numbers, and scorer limits; each keeps its value. Sessions, the seeding rules panel, lane slots, wind, and Hip # on Entries are also left out. See Getting Started.

  1. Create the meet, with the right Events/Rounds choice.
  2. Choose or check the seeding profile.
  3. Check divisions.
  4. Check events: discipline and rounds.
  5. Check lanes, field mark units, and sessions on Setup.
  6. Create or check teams, and turn off Scored? for any that shouldn’t score.
  7. Set team Lane Slots if you’ll use team-lane seeding.
  8. Create leagues for conference or double-dual reports.
  9. Import athletes and entries.
  10. Seed, and check team and scoring settings before race day.
