Track and Field Team Scoring
How team scores work in track and field meets: points ladders for individuals and relays, limits on scorers per school, finals-only scoring and scoring heats, events or divisions that don’t score, individual relays, and double duals. Team codes must be consistent for any of it to add up.
Only finals score team points
Team points come from finals only. Prelim and semifinal places don’t score. Make sure each event’s rounds are right (the last round is the final) before trusting the team totals.
Points ladders: how many points each place earns
On Setup → Team Scoring:
- Individual points: points for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and so on, such as
10,8,6,5,4,3,2,1. Blank uses10,8,6,5,4,3,2,1. - Relay points: a separate ladder for relays, such as
10,8,6,4,2. Blank uses the individual ladder.
Limit how many athletes per school score
Individual scorers and Relay squads on Setup → Team Scoring limit how many athletes,
or relay squads, from one school can score in an event. Blank or 0 means no limit. An athlete beyond
the limit still has their place and result; they just don’t add points.
At the Basic level these limits aren’t shown, and the meet keeps its values.
Different scoring for one division
A division can have its own scoring. On the division’s edit screen:
- Score this division off leaves the division out of team scoring, for example an exhibition division.
- Individual points, Relay points, Individual scorers, and Relay squads override the meet’s settings for that division. Blank uses the meet’s.
Make one event not count toward team scores
To keep an event’s results without it scoring team points, open the event and turn off Scored? under Timing & Scoring.
Only some finals heats score (scoring heats)
When a final is run in more than one heat or section, but only some should count toward team scoring, such as a fast section that scores and slower sections that don’t:
- Open Events and open the event.
- On the final’s Round Setup card, set Heats to 2 or more.
- Tick Only some finals heats score, then tick the heats that score.
Leaving every heat unticked means every finals heat scores. Results and places in the non-scoring heats stay as they are; only team points change, and reports reflect it. This isn’t offered on combined races (super-events).
Individual relay scoring (add up each school’s best athletes)
Individual relay? under Timing & Scoring scores an individual event as a relay: each school’s best athletes, up to Athletes per relay, are added together (their times, or for field events their marks), and the totals are placed and scored as relay team results. Athletes with a squad letter are grouped by school and letter. Athletes with no team code, or on a team with Scored? off, aren’t counted. In a timed event, a school with fewer than Athletes per relay finishers doesn’t score. At the Basic level these controls aren’t shown.
Keep a team from scoring
To keep a team in the meet and results without it scoring, turn off its Scored? toggle on Teams or on the team’s page. See Teams and Leagues.
Double duals and league scoring
For meets scored as head-to-head matchups, such as a double dual, use Leagues (on Teams, choose Leagues):
- With no leagues yet and 2 to 6 scoring teams, Leagues offers Double Duals and Generate double duals.
- Tools → Generate Double-Dual Leagues is always listed, and says why when it isn’t available.
It creates a league for each pairing of scoring teams (teams with Scored? off are ignored), so reports can show each matchup.
Where team scores appear
- Team Scoring Summary: each team’s total.
- League / Double-Dual Results (with leagues): each league or matchup’s scores.
- Results reports with Show team scores turned on under Customize.
Before you trust the team totals
- Team codes are clean and consistent, for athletes and relays.
- Finals rounds are set up right.
- Scoring heats are set where only some finals heats score.
- Relay events have the Relay discipline.
- Points ladders and scorer limits match the rule book.
- Teams, divisions, and events that shouldn’t score have scoring turned off.
