Super-Events
A super-event (combined race) is one physical race or contest that feeds results into two or more separate events, such as girls and boys running the 3200 together, or varsity and JV in one cross country race. This page covers creating one, where entries and results go, hand timing it, places and scoring, results status, and FinishLynx.
What a super-event is
A super-event is a container for a combined competition.
Common example:
- You still want separate Girls 3200m and Boys 3200m events for scoring, reports, and entries.
- But on meet day you actually run one physical race called Combined 3200 Meter Run.
- In 2Timer, the combined race is the super-event.
- The girls and boys events remain the sub-events underneath it.
This lets operators time or import the race once, while still keeping separate division results where they matter.
When to use a combined race
Super-events are most useful when:
- two or more T&F division events are run together on the track
- XC divisions share one physical race but still need separate results
- road races combine categories in one timed start but still want split result views
They are less useful when the competition is truly one event with no need to split results later.
Where entries and results go in a combined race
2Timer treats the records differently depending on what you are doing:
- Super-event: the combined race or contest operators interact with on race day. Its results are recorded here.
- Sub-events: the underlying division events that keep entries, divisions, and scoring. Each one shows its own places, worked out from the combined race.
Important rule:
- Entries belong to the sub-events, not the super-event itself.
That means:
- add or import athletes into the girls, boys, varsity, JV, or other sub-events
- do not build the roster directly on the super-event
Combine events into one race (create a super-event)
To run two events as one race, such as the girls 3200 and boys 3200 together, combine them:
- Open Events.
- Select at least two events that will run together. They must have the same type, distance, and discipline, have one round each, and not already be in a combined race.
- Press Create Super Event.
- Enter its Name, and check its Event #. Super-events are numbered from 10001.
- Press Create.
2Timer creates the super-event and puts the selected events under it as its sub-events.
Add an event to a combined race, or take one out
Open the event from Events and, under Event Links, set Part of super-event to the combined race, or to None to take it out. The event must match the super-event’s type, distance, and discipline.
How timing and results flow in a combined race
For running events, the normal operator workflow is:
- Keep entries on the sub-events.
- Send the super-event to FinishLynx or import results using the super-event’s event number.
- Let 2Timer route each result row into the correct sub-event.
In practice, 2Timer uses bibs and the meet setup to separate the combined race back into the right division event.
Hand timing a combined race
Time, apply, and identify the combined race on the super-event. Stopwatch… on a sub-event opens the super-event’s watch for you.
- Apply Times on the super-event. Until bibs go in, 2Timer cannot tell who finished where, so it files the finishers in the first sub-event for now, and the review says which one under Where finishers go.
- Apply Bib Numbers on the super-event. Each finisher goes to the race for their athlete’s gender, and the review says how many go to each race before you apply. Places in the combined race do not change.
You can apply the bibs first and the times second; every finisher ends up in the same race either way. Two things 2Timer cannot decide on its own, and says so in the review:
- a bib with no athlete yet waits in the first sub-event until you give that bib to its athlete on Athletes, or match its athlete on the super-event’s Entries — either one moves the finish to the athlete’s race;
- a runner whose gender is not recorded, or whose gender has two races here (Varsity and JV girls, say), stays where they are — select them on the super-event’s Entries and use Move to….
Edit the current bibs and Edit the current times list the whole combined race in finish order, and Save to a file puts either list aside so you can load it back later with Load a file.
What to edit on the super-event and what on each division’s event
As a rule of thumb:
- edit entries and roster membership on the sub-events
- enter or import combined race results at the super-event level: times, marks, finish order, typed places, field input, and jump-offs
- set the results status (Unofficial, Under Review, Official) on the super-event
- review separate placements and scoring on the sub-events
On a sub-event, Generate Sample Results… and Clear Data’s Clear times and Clear timing and place are shown but unavailable: those are done on the super-event. Clearing identities and deleting rows still work on the sub-event.
A combined race has one round (no prelims)
A super-event has one round, though it can have several heats. An event with prelims and a final can’t go into a super-event, a round can’t be added to one of its sub-events, and there’s no advancement from it. To run prelims and finals, keep the events separate.
Seeding and sessions for a combined race
Seed the combined race on the super-event: the Seeding queue leaves out its sub-events and seeds the super-event as one field across them. Put the super-event, not its sub-events, into a session.
On the Entries/Results side, 2Timer can show:
- a combined super-event view
- the normal individual sub-event view
Places and team scores in a combined race
Every finisher has a place in the combined race, and each sub-event numbers its own finishers from that order.
- The super-event shows the combined places: a girl who crossed second behind a boy is 2nd.
- Each sub-event shows places within that event: the same girl, as the first girl, is 1st in the girls’ event. Its results, heat places, exports, and team scores all use these places.
- Editing one runner’s time can change other runners’ combined places. It never changes the order within a sub-event unless it changes who beat whom in that event.
- Award groups and gender places are counted within each sub-event, from its own division, and the combined view shows the same ones.
This means you can run one race physically while still preserving separate girls/boys, varsity/JV, or other division outcomes.
Typing a place in a combined race
With Override checked on the place, the place you type is a place in the combined race. On a sub-event’s entry the form labels the box Place in the combined race and shows the Place in the event that it will print, before you save.
Ties and jump-offs in a combined race
Finishers tie when their results tie, whatever their sub-events. Rule on a tie on the super-event: open Field Input on the super-event for a jump-off. Sub-events don’t offer a jump-off. The order you give applies to the combined race and to each sub-event.
Results status for a combined race (Official, Under Review)
A combined race has one results status, set on the super-event once the race is complete. Every sub-event shows it and has no status control of its own. To put one division under review, set the super-event to Under Review; every sub-event then shows Under Review. A correction to any finisher restarts the quiet period for the whole race.
Changing a bib or athlete in a combined race
Made on the super-event, a bib or athlete change that means the athlete belongs in a different sub-event moves the entry to the sub-event for the athlete’s gender. If no single sub-event takes that gender — two races for it, or no gender recorded — the entry stays where it is and 2Timer says so. Made on a sub-event, an athlete of another gender asks whether to keep the entry in this race, move it to the athlete’s race, or cancel. When you create a new athlete for an entry, choose their gender so 2Timer can file them in the right race.
Combined races in meets from earlier versions
Opening an older meet changes its places in no way; they take the new meaning the next time the race is recalculated. If every sub-event of a race had the same results status — all Official, say — the super-event takes that status when the meet is first opened in this version, or when an older backup is restored. If the sub-events had different statuses, the super-event starts Unofficial: set it yourself. A tie ruling set on a sub-event isn’t carried over: rule on the tie again on the super-event.
Export a combined race to Hy-Tek or MileSplit
In the Hy-Tek results export (for MileSplit and similar sites), each sub-event exports under its own event number with its own places, matching your printed results: the first girl is 1st in the girls’ event, not her place in the combined race. Choosing the super-event in the export exports all of its sub-events. See Results and Reports.
FinishLynx and combined races
Super-events are especially useful with FinishLynx:
- EVT export sends one combined event block to Lynx.
- LIF import can take a result file for the super-event and route rows back into the correct sub-event.
- LFF import does the same for a combined field event: each athlete’s marks go on their own sub-event.
An athlete in a field results file who has no entry is added to the one sub-event for their gender. When 2Timer can’t tell which sub-event that is, because no gender is recorded or two sub-events take that gender, the row is held under Import Review with the sub-events it could belong to. Enter the athlete in the right one, then link the row.
Markers, gun, and sessions for a combined race
Treat the super-event as the race that’s actually run:
- Put timing markers on the super-event, not on its sub-events.
- Record the gun on the super-event; sub-events share it.
- Put the super-event in a session.
Sub-events keep the separate rosters and scoring.
Combined races: common problems
| Problem | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cannot add an entry to the super-event | Super-events are read-only for roster membership | Add the athlete or relay to the correct sub-event instead |
| Results imported but landed in the wrong division | Routing data was incomplete or ambiguous | Check bib numbers, relay identity, gender, and division setup |
| Combined result looks right but team scoring is missing | Team scores belong to the sub-events | Review the sub-event results and scoring setup |
| A sub-event has no results status control | A combined race’s status is set on its super-event | Open the super-event and set the status there |
| A field result is held under Import Review | 2Timer could not tell the athlete’s sub-event | Enter the athlete in the right sub-event, then link the held row to that entry |
| Hand-timed finishers stayed in the first sub-event | 2Timer could not tell their race from their gender | Record the athletes’ genders, then select them on the super-event and use Move to… |
Good uses for a combined race
- Combined girls and boys 3200m in track & field
- Combined varsity and JV XC race with separate reporting
- Combined road-race categories that still need separate downstream views
